'The Dance of Leadership' workshop

ByHeart's signature in-person workshop
The Dance of Leadership workshop uses the fundamentals of Argentine Tango to offer a fresh way to enhance your visceral understanding of leading and relating.

Leadership is notoriously difficult to teach, because it's invisible and intangible.

Come at it from a new angle through the metaphor of leading and following in the physical sense - by moving around in space.
Learn to lead in a tangible, embodied way.
This workshop gets going quickly, to let you experience the power of leading the way in the Tango for yourself.
Less talk, more learning
Using the principles you'll learn in our initial practice, we'll explore your current challenges, and discover new solutions.
Safe space
Experiential
Discussing your findings with your fellow participants helps you get into the subtleties and supports your learning.
- Rijn Vogelaar, author of 'The Superpromoter'
"People in leadership positions must have influence to do their job properly."
Dance led me to my calling as a coach, guide and teacher.
As a dance teacher, some of my Tango students started coming to me with their personal crises and questions, and I realised that my calling in life was to help people truly see themselves and what they're capable of.

This spurred me on to train in coaching and counselling skills, which felt like a natural and perfect extension of the teaching and training skills I was already practising through dance.

Now, I combine the principles of leadership coaching and dance teaching in my unique signature workshop.
What this workshop will do for you
Build leadership skills at all levels
Teaching leadership is notoriously difficult, in part due to the abstract nature of the concepts. Having taught people to lead (and follow) for Argentine Tango, I combine dance with expertise in Leadership Coaching and Systemic Coaching, resulting in a unique approach to guiding people to learn leading. No dance background is needed... just two simple instructions are enough to set people up to succeed!
Team playing skills & confidence
We bring subtle and complex interactions to life through simple gestures and movement, giving participants a base code for recognising what is going on, how issues can be resolved and the overall tone in the community enhanced and harmonised.
Organisational development
Organisations which prioritise learning and development are at a distinct advantage in the fast-paced, ever-evolving world of business. Throughout this workshop, we elucidate the dynamics which come into play in complex workplace situations, fostering learning from within.
Stress management
This workshop promotes autonomy, equipping participants to identify the actions they can take to improve the way they manage demanding situations and enjoy a greater sense of empowerment in their professional life.
Create an inclusive culture
Practice is more persuasive than preaching! Participants directly experience the value of sensing the subtler layers of group and inter-personal situations, and of seeing the larger context in play. These are the skills necessary for building an inclusive culture, which we develop through personal practice and observation, and reinforce through guided discussion.
What our workshop participants say
"It is about making the undiscussable discussable, about not taking for granted what is taken for granted, about getting the underground above-ground so that the unmanageable can become manageable."
Chris Argysis, 'Overcoming Organizational Defences'
"It was an eye-opening experience and I now understand why I feel frustrated about my particular problem in a physical metaphor. I do not know how my problem can be solved, yet understanding why has given me a sense of relief."
Dr Haruko Okamoto, University of Sussex
Watch my TEDx talk: 'Dance, Tango, Life'
In 2013, I gave a TEDx talk on the surprising things that devotees of Argentine Tango find the dance brings into their lives: a new medium for communication, an opportunity to heal, and even a sense of communion and peace within themselves.

My work to make learning Tango more accessible laid the groundwork for what has since become ByHeart's signature workshop on thriving in dynamic environments.

In embodied learning, physical movement is the medium through which we internalize knowledge.

The unique ByHeart format using elements of Argentine Tango was presented at the 2nd Active Learning Conference aimed at the Higher Education sector in June 2018.
